Any clear timeline on upgrades to Centos 8 / Alma / Rocky? Installing modern software/apps on Opalstack is really difficult now (I just came across an issue that g++ 4.9+ is required to build a node module). I may end up having to leave Opalstack if there's no light at the end of this tunnel by mid 2024 🙁

pjrobertson I believe we're on track to have new servers with Rocky 9 some time in Q2.

Note that we most likely will not be upgrading existing servers, but we can migrate customers to new servers with minimal downtime.

Regarding g++, you can use an updated dev stack in your shell by running source scl_source enable devtoolset-11, for example:

Will the Rocky servers be ready by this year end ?

anjanesh we're not going to use Rocky, it's going to be AlmaLinux 9. We should have the first new servers ready before the end of the year.

sean I'm sure that many of us here appreciate how much work it must be, to set up servers with a new platform and new major versions of many crucial software packages. And we're really willing you on to success, knowing how many unforeseeable obstacles are likely turn up, on the path you are treading.

How's it going, there? First AlmaLinux 9 VPS within a month, and first AlmaLinux in Q1 2025, do you think? I guess that we're not going to see new services being offered in the next couple of weeks, are we? No sense in launching such a major change just before a period when you'll all be hoping for a quiet, low-maintenance Christmas & New Year.

Will you be looking for some users to volunteer to beta-test setups and things in the New Year?

dragonxi We are getting closer to finalizing the new AlmaLinux OS setup, but we are not ready to commit to a specific ETA just yet. It's probably going to be a couple more weeks until the new OS build is deployed into production environment. There is no other info we can share at this point, but we'll make an announcement across all our communication channels as soon as the first AlmaLinux servers are available.

There will be no scheduled mass server migrations to the new OS, only scheduled individual migrations for customers who request to migrate.

dragonxi there's still no release date but we do expect it to be within a few weeks.

I believe the OS version will be 9.5.

The minimum versions supported for some common languages and tools are:

PHP v8.3
Python v3.9
Node.js v16.20
Ruby v3.3
Go 1.21
Git 2.43
MySQL v8.4
PostgreSQL v17.2

Note that the following software will not be supported on our AlmaLinux 9 servers:

Python v2.x
PHP v5.x
PHP v7.x

dragonxi The OS and hosting infrastructure typically consume around 10-15 GB of storage and 1GB of RAM (although that can vary with system usage) so if you subtract that from the plan specs you'll see what's left for your apps.

Any reason why not choosing MySQL 9.2.0 ?

anjanesh Hi there, I spoke with the team and basically the reason is that MySQL 9.2.0 is an innovation release, not an LTS, so it’s only supported for a short time. The next LTS after 8.4 will be 9.7, which I guess is due maybe sometime in 2026.
