  • Migrating From Webfaction. The clock is ticking.

I'm also a longtime WF customer and needing to move. A comparison will be essential. Most of what I have is custom PHP, but also a WordPress site or two, some Python test projects as well as Django on one or two of them, NodeJS for a service, and one Ruby app. But, also have many domains I have parked.

It seems OpalStack can handle this, but my questions I don't see answers for that I need to plan out are:
1) Moving email accounts, including a couple I have for others that run on one of my domains and sorting out their access to reset their own passwords
2) I have some .htaccess running and not sure if they will still run, if so that is great
3) Any scripts or support for shifting things to Opalstack? WordPress? Etc?

    vanderwal Moving email accounts

We'll be documenting our email API next week for customers who need to create a lot of mailboxes and addresses at once. Instructions for moving email messages from other hosts are available here: Importing Email from Another Provider

vanderwal sorting out their access to reset their own passwords

That's a planned feature but not available just yet.

vanderwal I have some .htaccess running and not sure if they will still run, if so that is great

Our "Apache+PHP-FPM" application type (and Wordpress) supports .htaccess directives, no problem there.

vanderwal Any scripts or support for shifting things to Opalstack? WordPress? Etc?

    Yes, both :-)

    • We're building a suite of WF migration scripts with the goal of making a complete WF account migrator. At this time the scripts can migrate Wordpress sites, generic PHP sites, and MySQL databases. We should have a PostgreSQL migrator available early in the coming week, and other migrators not long after that.
    • We're happy to work with you to come up with migration steps for whatever you need.

In either case, contact support via email (or via the widget in the dashboard) to let us know what you need, and we'll help you get started :-)

igor OS does not support wildcard domains and wildcard SSL.

Wildcard domains are a planned feature, will follow up here when it is available.

You can use wildcard certificates issued by 3rd party providers right now, and once we support wildcard domains our LE setup will be able to generate them here for free :-)

I may not be the average Dev type user... but i migrated 10 sites from Webfaction to Opalstack with, for the most part, nary a hitch! One site i had to postpone due to the fact that i had to wait for a feature that initially was not available. I have now been here for over a year and happy as a clam!

I'm looking to move a few WF hosted sites. My big issue is my rails site.
      Does Opalstack support
      Rails 3.2.13(nginx 1.4.1/Passenger 4.0.2/Ruby 2.0.0)

kolja one and the same... head on over here dude!

        RTIT Does Opalstack support
        Rails 3.2.13(nginx 1.4.1/Passenger 4.0.2/Ruby 2.0.0)

We support Rails but our default install does not use Nginx+Passenger. If you really need Nginx+Passenger we can probably help you get it running.

Rails 3.x is pretty old but I think we can help you get that running as well. Will try to get a HOWTO posted soon, please ping support if you need assistance in the meantime. Thanks!

PS . Someone asked if the following is supported OS: Would postmaster work on it?

        • sean replied to this.

bici Not sure which "postmaster" you're referring to, but probably :-)

If you can give me a link to the specific project or app I can try to verify.

          • bici replied to this.

sean I think the felller was referring to a gmail app which I believe is a bit long in the tooth 😉
i verified. he is referring to Postmaster Tools from Google.

sean Does this mean that existing wildcard SSL certificates cannot be installed?

            • sean replied to this.

allrite you can use wildcard certificates but you can't create wildcard domains in our setup here. I've updated my earlier answer to clarify.

              Hi,
I’m also a webfaction customer for ten years now looking for an alternative.
I have an old rails application running in rails 2. Would be possible to run it in Opalstack? I’m using rvm in webfaction (they don’t support rails 2 in the control panel setup)
              Thanks!

              • sean replied to this.

Jorgeoa I'm testing a few Rails-related things today and will let you know if I can get Rails 2 working. Can you tell me which version of Ruby you're using in rvm?

I have an old (1.3) Django app to migrate. Can I just 'zip up' my WF account and transfer it over so that Django 1.3 comes with it?

Also, any ETA on wildcard domains? Our app relies on it.

                  Thanks for starting Opalstack!

You can zip it up and copy it over, but it's unlikely that it will "just work". To get it running you'll need to adapt it to our uwsgi setup by following the instructions here: https://community.opalstack.com/d/125-wf-to-opalstack-django-and-postgres-where-to-begin/2

roam3 Also, any ETA on wildcard domains?

None at this time, sorry. So much to do!

sean I’m using ruby 1.8.7 and rails 2.3.5
                    Thanks!

Thanks, I'll try to get that working and will let you know how it goes.
