Django 4.2 deprecates PostgreSQL 11 support

Wondering what version of PostgreSQL we have as of today on the shared servers ? 15 or anything >= 12 ?

anjanesh I believe it's 11.x, but you can check on your server with psql --version.

It's still the case as mentioned in my earlier post that we do not have v12+ on any shared instance. So the manual install is the only work around at this time. I know my guide is only for 12.14, but you can try the same steps for newer versions (from https://ftp.postgresql.org/pub/source/) and see how it goes. Happy to help if needed, of course.

I'm still waiting for OS upgrade to upgrade to VPS. Or should I now wait for the OS upgrade ?
On VPS do I get the control panel to install psql 15 ?

anjanesh our VPS service runs the same platform as our shared service and PostgreSQL v11 is the only managed version available.

We're working on an upgrade but for now if you need a newer version then you'll need to build it from source and run it as a custom app.

767dev At this time newer PostgreSQL versions have to be manually compiled as demonstrated in my post above. We'll announce updates as soon as we have them.

I guess I too will wait for updates esp on the OS major update before switching to a VPS.

dnx we don't have a firm date but it will be soon, we're already rolling this out for testing internally.

I'm refreshing this page all the time for updates! Almost a month on - please can you give us another update? I'm ready to go live with Django 4.2 for multiple apps (support for 3.2 ends this April) and I'm feeling a bit out of my depth with building v12 from source / using a custom app. Thanks 🙂

Same here. I was just about to update to Django 5 for one of my projects, and ran into this little gotcha: https://docs.djangoproject.com/en/5.0/releases/4.2/#dropped-support-for-postgresql-11

And similar, I'm not really looking forward to install my own version of Postgres, even if only that the data migration will be hell.

It's been only 5 days since Sean's last update, but still: any news? 🙂 Even just a release date would be welcome, so I know if I should wait with the deployment, or just stick with Django 4.1.7 for now.

I was just about to add that Django 4.1.7 is already considered insecure. And we're unable to upgrade Django unless taking on the extra work of installing a custom Postgres version. This leaves me in a little pickle...

But ok, thanks for the response, as always, Sean. I'll wait patiently and stick with the older Django for the moment.

I think 4.1.13 is secure, if you are on 4.1.7 then you should upgrade to the latest 4.1.x release.

Just sending a nudge / enquiring about progress again. As @webtweakers above said, Django 4.1 is no longer in the extended support phase (this ended Dec 2023). Along with Django 3.2.

I hoped I could publish the 4.2 upgrades for my clients' sites by 1st of April 2024, when support for 3.2 officially ended.
