HOWTO migrate your email addresses and mailboxes from WebFaction

sean Did the mailbox management interface change? I've checked the documentation and the knowledge base, as well as going through this entire thread, and yet I can still find no way to change the mailbox password in the Opalstack control panel "Email" interface.

Neither the "Mailbox" edit functionality nor the "Email address" edit functionality include it anywhere. There's no way to "select a mailbox" and no purple buttons (as described in documentation), as far as I can tell. What am I missing?

(This is now getting quite urgent for me, as not all of my imported email addresses have their mailbox passwords in the notices section, and the created_mailuser_passwords.ini file only includes ONE mailbox/password pair instead of dozens.)

john-asl sorry about this, I missed that section when updating the new docs. Will update it ASAP.

You can update your mailbox password by clicking the key icon (in the right column) for that mailbox at https://my.opalstack.com/mail/.

OK, actually I just realized that the notices log is paginated, so I was able to get mailbox passwords there.

I'd still really like to know how to change mailbox passwords, though!

Ah, OK... The key icon does different things on different pages, so I wasn't expecting that!

I'm getting the following error whilst trying to use the email migration tool. Any advice is appreciated:

Fixed the above by removing comments anything after e.g. (bool) and it ran just fine.

(1) In config; [webfaction]; server = web1 what is "web1", and does it need to be changed to some WebFaction reference?

(2) I'm planning to migrate all mail from all 6 of my domains. One of my domains uses email that's hosted by GMail (part of GSuite for our business), and Webfaction holds holds information for those 3rd party servers. Will this migrate over? Or best to setup manually.

(3) Some domains don't have email associated. Does it cause problems if I include them in a complete sweep of Webfaction in a single migration.

You can probably tell that we're piecing this together as we go (web not our forte) but have had great success migrating the sites themselves earlier today 🙂 Thank you. Hoping email will be equally good experience.

change "web1" to your webfaction server's short name like "web502" or whatever.

Use the "dns" option on wfmigrate to migrate your custom DNS records (which control the external email setup at WF), eg:

mkdir -p ~/migrations/dns
cd ~/migrations/dns
cp /opt/app_migrators/wf_generic_dns/config-template.ini dns.ini
# edit dns.ini to configure the migration, then...
wfmigrate dns ./dns.ini --mode simulate
# and then if all goes well...
wfmigrate dns ./dns.ini --mode do

Nope, the migrator will see that you have no emails for those domains and skip them.

Hi there, thanks for the migrator script. I managed to import accounts from WF, but am now trying to migrate the mail data. What is not clear to me is this part of the configuration file:

[mailusers]
opal_mailuser_1 = opal_mailuser_1_password
opal_mailuser_2 = opal_mailuser_2_password
opal_mailuser_3 = opal_mailuser_3_password

Do I manually populate this? How do I know the passwords? Weren't they generated by the first part of the import script? Also, how do I associate the email addresses on WF with these opal_mailuser_X accounts? I tried finding more in-depth documentation but haven't found anything other than this forum post - if this is documented somewhere please point me in the direction and I will take it from there. Many thanks.

paul that info is just a boilerplate example.

The first step, ie the "email" migration, created a file named created_mailuser_passwords.ini that has the info you need to drop into the email-data migration config. It will contain your actual mailbox names and the passwords that were generated here.

If you can't find that file then you can get all of the passwords from your dashboard log at: https://my.opalstack.com/logs/

Thanks a lot Sean for the quick response. There is no created_mailuser_passwords.ini file. Is this supposed to be in the home directory? Can't find it there, neither in the logs directory or apps directory. Do note: when running the migration script, we constantly get disconnected from the ssh session (this happens a lot, not sure why, but happens on different machines, despite stable connections). Could it have ended prematurely? It seems to have completed but now that this file is missing, I am unsure.
I do see the passwords in the logs URL you provided. I guess I can copy and paste them manually, let me try that. I assume the system will then know how to associate WF accounts with accounts on Opalstack.

paul the file should be located in whatever directory you were in when you ran the "email" migration but if you ran that migration step multiple times then it may have been overwritten.

The problem with your logins seems to be an issue with your subscription, I'm correcting that now and will follow up via email.

I did a migration of my emails successfully, but it seems the backup has no sent items box? only the inbox? I thought it was the entire mailbox backbup provided by webfaction.

tymah you can see the contents of your WebFaction archive by listing the hidden files in the archive directory, eg:

ls -la ~/wf_archive_delivery/mailboxes/name_of_mailbox/Maildir

If you don't see directory names like ".Sent", ".Sent Items", etc then the folders were not included in the archive that you got from WebFaction.

If the folders are present in the archive but you don't see them in your mail client then please email support @ opalstack.com to let us know the mailbox name and the location of your archive so that we can investigate. Thanks!
