Forwarding Opalstack domain inbound email to external email account

I have several email addresses set up on WebFaction to forward to external email accounts (without saving on webfaction) email directed to those email addresses. I am trying to set this up on Opalstack as part of my WebFaction>>Opalstack migration. It's not working for me.

I am not clear where, if anywhere, this is covered in the Opalstack Guide help page but the email address configuration definitely looks like Opalstack intends to support it.

Under Outgoing Mail Domains of this document, there is mention of need for MX records. Does that apply to forwarding and if so, what should the MX records look like?

danhurley Forwarding is mentioned in the email section of the dashboard docs here: Managing Email Addresses

Any domain that you're forwarding to needs to have MX records, otherwise our mail server won't know how to forward the mail.

If the domain that your forwarding to already has functioning email, then it already has MX records and you don't need to worry about it.

When you set/create your email address in the Opalstack control panel, you can just add a forwarding address without specifying a local mail user and your email will be forwarded on without being stored on Opalstack servers.

sean Hi Sean,

I must be doing something wrong because forwarding is not working for a couple of test addresses I created.

I set up an address with no "Destination" (I don't want Opalstack servers to hold messages) and a single "Forward" to an account on att.net which is a mail service so domain has MX records.

Is there somewhere I can check for log message that might provide a clue about why it is not working.

danhurley Please email our support to let us know the details, ie:

The forwarding address
The address to which it forwards
The sender and recipient addresses that you used for the test

Once we have that info we can check your config and the mail logs to see what's happening.

dcallebaut the problem @danhurley was that AT&T was temporarily blocking our mail.

If your own mail is not going out then please email our support team with the details so that we can investigate.

Hi - in the process of migrating from WF. I am using an external email service (tutanota) and I set up all of the DNS records. Do I also need to set up a "mail forwarding" setting? On WF, there was a setting in the domain, that was specifically for "email to be handled externally". Here, there seems to be a forwarding feature, which could be the same? Also, do I need to have specific OpalStack mail usernames or can I have none? Thanks!

guyhoffman if you're using an external mail service for your domain then all you need to do is create the DNS records that your mail service requires, typically:

1 or more MX records (MX is always required)
a TXT record for SPF
a TXT record for DMARC
CNAMEs and TXT for DKIM
Maybe other CNAMEs and TXTs as directed by your mail provider.

If your MX is pointing at a different mail service, then your mail will never arrive at our servers so you do not need mail users or forwarding addresses here.
