I have been diligently training GMail since I started that thread about SPF ~ 3 weeks back, and it's getting better. I'm not sure why switching from WF to Opalstack forwarding caused gmail to flip its bits, but it sure did.
I tried switching away from GMail to Roundcube webmail, but I was not a fan at all of the interface. I also tried using external POP3 support in GMail to pull emails from Opalstack mail servers without forwarding, but that proved to introduce 30-60 minutes of lag on email delivery. Not good. I'm not happy about being so beholden to Google for something like email, but for the time being this seems the best way forward for me.
