I'm considering moving here from WebFaction. The only data I want to migrate are my emails (for multiple email addresses on one domain). Is there an easy way to do that?
Question on shell access: will I be able to install software myself (apt-get install ....)? If not, will I be able to get a C compiler (clang/llvm or gcc), a Java SDK (javacc, java, ...), perl, python, Subversion client (svn), Subversion server (svnserve), and emacs? Thanks!

You can't install system packages with yum (we're running CentOS, so the package manager is yum not apt). However, you can install just about anything you want using other methods, eg:

Here's an example of how to install a custom Python: HOWTO install a newer (or older) version of Python - the key things there are setting your configure options like PREFIX to install it in your home directory.
You can use alternative package managers like in this example: Miniconda package manager

That said, I think everything you listed above is installed on all of our servers by default so maybe already you're good to go!

sean Seems like everything I asked for is there except for javacc (and related tools in the Java development kit). Do I have to install this in my user space? It is pretty big.

sfsiegel we have the java-1.8.0-openjdk.x86_64 package installed which I guess does not provide those tools.

Can you reply with a list of the tools you expect to have? I'll see if we can add them to our setup here.

sean I think java-1.8.0-openjdk-devel.x86_64 provides the runtime and all the developer tools, such as javacc.

sfsiegel I've done a test install and it looks installing java-1.8.0-openjdk-devel adds the following executables:

javac
javadoc
javah
javap

Are those sufficient for your needs?
