An upcoming change to our email filtering may result in a higher volume of junk mail reaching your mailboxes.
Like most email providers, we scan incoming email for junk mail (spam) and other threats. Each message is assigned a spam score, and messages scored above a set threshold are rejected and bounced back to the sender without reaching your mailbox. By rejecting those messages, recipients are protected from the worst threats and our forwarding servers do not get blocked by other mail providers.
We’ve recently received reports of false-positives, where legitimate email was rejected. After reviewing several options, we’ve decided to raise the rejection threshold in order to reduce these false-positive rejections. This means a message will need a higher spam score before it is rejected.
As a result, for mail sent to domains that use Opalstack's mail system there will be:
- Reduced false-positive rejections
- Fewer rejections overall, possibly resulting in more spam making it to your mailboxes
We’ll begin making this change tomorrow, 6 August 2026, by increasing the threshold slightly each day until we reach the new final setting.
You can filter junk email in your mailboxes by following the instructions in our user guide: Filtering Email
If you're already using filters on your mailbox, then it is unlikely you will see any more spam in your inbox, and more likely that you'll see more spam in your Junk/Spam folder (if you use one).
If you need help creating filters, would like to opt out of spam rejection for specific domains, or have any questions or concerns regarding this change then please email our suppoort team and we'll be happy to assist.
