wagtail or octobercms ?

Anyone has any experience in choosing between the two ?

wagtail is Django based
octobercms is Laravel based

I was told to not use WordPress at any cost due to the constant security issues in WordPress and the manpower required to maintain WordPress in the long run.

No e-Commerce so no WooCommerce like setup but require a catalogue with some 10,000 products or so, so need a category page, product list page, product view page and send inquiry on the product page instead of Add to Cart.

Also looking at mass import via CSV for text fields - images of each product via django-import-export in django-admin.

Any good reason not to choose wagtail and opt for Laravel based Statamic/October/Winter CMS ?

anjanesh - If you're comfortable with Django, you'll enjoy what Wagtail brings to the table. FWIW, WP lifted a lot of their new functionality from Wagtail's streamfield. Also, though I haven't used it personally, they've put effort into making Wagtail a headless option. Loosely, Wagtail provides the CMS bits a default Django install lacks, but still assumes you know Django well enough to make things work. Users get their CMS backend and workflows while you get Django and Python. Google, NASA, City of San Francisco, and others seems to like it. https://madewithwagtail.org

I'm intrigued by Wagtail. The primary advantage appears to be its open-source nature and free availability. Having worked with Statamic and Craft CMS, I appreciate their capabilities, but their pricing models present a significant barrier.

Thanks for your response - I am comfortable with Django but was wondering - once I install wagtail will I still be able to do other normal Django related apps not connected to the wagtail system ? Or its wagtail all the way once wagtail is installed ?

anjanesh You can safely use Wagtail alongside other Django apps - just make sure you're using the correct app's virtual environment upon installing Wagtail.

Here are the steps you can take to install Wagtail on Opalstack:

Create a shell user (or use an existing one), create a new Django app, and a site record via your Opalstack dashboard. I'll use "myuser" and "myapp" for the user and app name in the steps below.

SSH to your shell user account and do the following:

cd ~/apps/myapp
source env/bin/activate # this is important
pip install wagtail
wagtail start mysite
cd mysite
pip install -r requirements.txt
# stop here and do the applicable DB setup from https://docs.opalstack.com/topic-guides/django/#using-databases-with-django, then...
python manage.py migrate
python manage.py createsuperuser

Modify your uwsgi config and restart the app server:

cd ~/apps/myapp
sed -i -e 's/myproject/mysite/g' uwsgi.ini
./stop
sleep 3
./start

At that point, your new Wagtail site should be up and running on the site you created in step #1.

anjanesh It's still just Django under the hood, but add path('', include(wagtail_urls)) to the end of the urlpatterns in urls.py if you want Wagtail at the top. You'll also want to give the default Django backend a different path.

peter Thank you for posting this. It took me a minute to figure this out on my own a few months ago, but it's nice to see it in one place. @anjanesh I'll also mention that you'll want to create Nginx Static Only apps for static and media assets while you're at it.
