How do you go about installing redis in Opalstack?
Posting this here so maybe someone will add a tutorial for this 😄

Edit: No need to install Redis yourself!

We've installed Redis v5 on all of our servers, so you can create your Redis config in your home directory and just launch Redis like:

scl enable rh-redis5 -- redis-server $HOME/redis.conf

Redis v6 will be available on new servers later in 2021 when we start rolling out machines on CentOS 8.

I installed redis the other day by loosely following the old WF tutorial on SO: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/18622630/setting-up-redis-on-webfaction

Think I had to install redis 5 instead of 6 for some reason though. 😅

I'm sure Sean's tutorial will be better if you can wait.

Hey! I also managed to install it using miniconda package manager.
I just added a tutorial for this https://community.opalstack.com/d/150-miniconda-package-manager

after installing miniconda just do

$ conda install redis

It will install version 5.0.8 as of now.

I tried the latest version, 'make' doesn't work, downgrade to redis 3.2 that I use on wf and 'make' works

Is this okay or should I do something?

I did not make any changes to the default redis.conf file. Is this fine?

Please do not use the default port 6379 unless it's been specifically assigned to you, ie by creating a proxy port application in the dashboard.

Better yet, do not use a port at all - configure your Redis to listen only on a filesystem socket and make your connections through that. It's more secure and you'll have better performance.

Make a config file for supervisor: example
Start supervisor: supervisord -c $HOME/supervisor.conf

debiprasad You can set that path to the directory for whichever app you're controlling with supervisor.

Or, you can make a directory like ~/supervisor or whatever and put the config, socket, and pid in there.

sean I want to create a website where I can see Supervisor status. I had done it on Webfaction by creating a custom app (listening on port). Do you have any advice to achieve this? I would prefer to do this without a port if that is faster and secure.

debiprasad If you want to serve supervisor's web UI as a site on our platform then you'll need to use a proxy port app to get a port assignment and then configure the inet_http_server settings the same way you did at WF. Once that's done, add the proxy port app to a site route.

I'm using an online instance from redislabs to handle a website made in php, but as you can imagine it's not exactly ideal compared to a local instance.
