running a jar file

What do I have to do to get nohup java -jar project.jar running on my (shared) server ?

anjanesh You can use nohup to detach the process from the terminal like so:
( nohup java -jar project.jar > $HOME/logs/apps/app_name/app.log 2>&1 & )

Alternatively, you can use the daemonize tool which is pre-installed on all Opalstack servers:
daemonize -a -o $HOME/logs/apps/app_name/app.log -e $HOME/logs/apps/app_name/app.log -p $HOME/logs/apps/app_name/app.pid /usr/bin/java -jar project.jar

Thanks for your reply peter - thing is, I built the JAR via IntelliJ IDEA :

src/main/resources/application.properties

server.port=8443

Do I need to change this port number to step 4 of this post ?

anjanesh Yes, you would need to change the port number.

For java —jar project.jar to run as a web app, project.jar would need to implement its own web server functionality. If your java app does that, then you'd generally need to do the following:

Create a new "Nginx Proxy Port" app at https://my.opalstack.com/apps/ to get a port assignment for your app and make a note of the assigned port number.
Route the app to a site.
Configure your app to listen on its assigned port via whatever means your app provides for that (e.g., update the server.port value).
Start the app.
