pyodbc

I would like to use pyodbc within my Django application. Here are the steps I've taken

(with virtual env activated) pip install pyodbc
this tries to use setup.py because wheel is not installed but setup.py is depreciated so it fails.
(with virtual env activated) pip install wheel
this seems to work fine so I repeat pip install pyodbc
it gets a lot further but fails saying it can't find sql.h
quick Google tells me that I need to install unixODBC-devel to have sql.h
can't work out how to install this :-(
Any help would be very much appreciated.

Before you can install pyodbc you must first install unixodbc with the following commands:

mkdir -p ~/opt/src
cd ~/opt/src
wget ftp://ftp.unixodbc.org/pub/unixODBC/unixODBC-2.3.11.tar.gz
tar zxf unixODBC-2.3.11.tar.gz
cd unixODBC-2.3.11/
./configure --prefix=$HOME/opt
make
make install
export CPPFLAGS="-I$HOME/opt/include $CPPFLAGS"
export LDFLAGS="-L$HOME/opt/lib $LDFLAGS"

Once that's done you can activate your env and run pip install pyodbc.
