sending mail with Django

I'm just another ex Webfaction user 🙂
I've set a working <email_user> and <email_address> (webmail sends and receives mail without problems).
In my django settings I've written:

EMAIL_BACKEND = 'django.core.mail.backends.smtp.EmailBackend'
EMAIL_HOST = 'smtp.de.opalstack.com' (my server is based in germany)
EMAIL_HOST_USER = <email_user>
EMAIL_HOST_PASSWORD = <email_user_password>

along with EMAIL_USE_TLS and EMAIL_USE_SSL.

Unfortunately when I use send_mail() something seems to go wrong, and I get back a 502 error. What am I missing?

Thanks for your work, using Opalstack since yesterday, but it looks awesome!

Per the Django documentation you can't have EMAIL_USE_TLS and EMAIL_USE_SSL active simultaneously (they are mutually-exclusive settings).

Try either this...

EMAIL_BACKEND = 'django.core.mail.backends.smtp.EmailBackend'
EMAIL_HOST = 'smtp.de.opalstack.com' #(my server is based in germany)
EMAIL_HOST_USER = email_user
EMAIL_HOST_PASSWORD = email_user_password
EMAIL_USE_SSL = True
EMAIL_PORT = 465

... or this:

EMAIL_BACKEND = 'django.core.mail.backends.smtp.EmailBackend'
EMAIL_HOST = 'smtp.de.opalstack.com' #(my server is based in germany)
EMAIL_HOST_USER = email_user
EMAIL_HOST_PASSWORD = email_user_password
EMAIL_USE_TLS = True
EMAIL_PORT = 587

I didn't notice settings accepted True/False and were mutually excluding. Unfortunately either way server just hangs up (no more 502 error), maybe there is something wrong in my code, not in the settings...

andywar65 have a look in your app's uWSGI log for possible error messages and other details. The log is located at /home/shelluser/logs/appname/uwsgi.log.

You might also be able to enable debug mode for your Django site and get more info that way.

Ok, i fixed that!
I had to add the EMAIL_PORT, on Webfaction it was not required. Here are the settings:

EMAIL_PORT = 465 (it's 25 by default)
EMAIL_USE_SSL = True

andywar65 Good catch! I've updated my answer to include the appropriate port settings.

The reason is that WF still supports insecure SMTP connections (ie port 25 with no SSL/TLS), which is what Django will use unless you tell it otherwise.

Our SMTP only supports encrypted connections, so the SSL/TLS options are required.

In my django app, when I use USE_SSL/465 the connection simply hangs. When using USE_TLS/587 I receive:

ERROR There was an error sending an email: SMTP AUTH extension not supported by server.

My conf below:

EMAIL_HOST = 'smtp.us.opalstack.com'
EMAIL_HOST_USER = '***'
EMAIL_HOST_PASSWORD = '***'
EMAIL_USE_TLS = True
EMAIL_PORT = 587
SERVER_EMAIL='ABC <***>'
DEFAULT_FROM_EMAIL='ABC <****>'

vtdsol if I'm not mistaken that turned out to be some problem with your MX records, but if you're still having a problem please ping our support for assistance.

sean Correct, problem was with slow propagation of MX records. All solved now, thanks for the help!
